Practice breakdown from Las Vegas

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Top 10 cars are; 48, 5, 17, 24, 16, 33, 18, 99, 31 and 9. Top 15 cars include 2, 20,  29, 42, and 11.  B list sleepers are 20 and 47. C list sleepers 98 and 82 but 43 and 77 look better but don’t classify as sleepers.

Thought Jimmie Johnson had the fastest practice times as usual, with Mark Martin arguably as fast if not faster. Mark is happy with his car. Jeff Gordon is also very fast and all 3 should be good for a top 10, if not better.

RCR camp looks fast again but not as fast as last week. Bowyer was happy with his car and quit happy hour practice early. Harvick hit the wall friday and showed saturday that he has a fast car. Burton worked on long runs and should be bad fast on sunday.

Roush camp looks better this week. I couldn’t tell what kind of tires Kenseth was on but if they were old he’s my pick to win. Biffle is fast again and Edwards came on strong in happy hour. See all 3 as top 10 and potential winners.

Tony Stewart threw a bunch of stuff at his car and wasn’t happy with his ride. I thought his lap times looked pretty respectable though. Ryan Newman was happy with his car and should finish top 20 atleast. Just don’t trust Newman though.

Gibbs cars look decent. Logano might be the fastest of the trio. Said he had so much speed that he couldn’t get it to turn through the center. Good problem to have. I also think Kyle is pretty good, even though he fought loose all practice. I’d probably stay away from Hamlin right now.

Cars look similiar on the stop watch this week so crew chiefs notes will be of interest to me. I’d stick with the big teams this week gang.

I’m going to pick Matt Kenseth to win but i think any of my top 10 are capable. It’s easy to pick the 48 every week so i’ll pass. I’m thinking Biffle over Kyle, Kenseth and Burton over Harvick and Bowyer for now. Hornish over Speed but i don’t think Speed is junk and thought at the end of the session he looked decent. Hornish in the early practice was really fast on long runs. I think Sammy is a top 20 car and i say that with confidence.

Good luck FNPers

A List

1. Kyle Busch (9 starts remaining)

Busch, a native of Las Vegas, is the defending race winner and has won the last two poles at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

2. Mark Martin (9)

While I love Kyle Busch this week, he is still a high risk/high reward fantasy option. Mark Martin is a great complement to Busch due to his consistency. Kyle’s aggression and Mark’s patience give this week’s A-List a ton of flexibility, which is a huge advantage early in the season.

Martin did blow an engine in this race last year, but the 5 car was fast at all of the 1.5 mile racetracks in 2009, so I fully expect Crew Chief Allen Gustafson to unload a rocket ship Friday.

Practice Breakdown from California

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Top ten cars are 48, 42, 5, 29, 16, 33, 18, 31, 24, and 11.

Jimmie Johnson looks like the car to beat and i could only find a few who were close to him on lap times.

Speaking of th0se few they reside from the Richard Childress stable. Harvick looks to be the fastest of the trio but Bowyer and Burton look to be close behind.  With good starting positions this trio should all contend for the win.

Another strong stable of cars is the Earnhardt Ganassi bunch. Coincidentally they run the same engines as the RCR bunch.  Montoya really likes the high line and will also challenge the 48 and 29 for the win. Could this be the track where he gets his first oval win? I still don’t trust McMurray yet but he’s an excellent sleeper option and a top 15 run is certainly possible.

Mark Martin was real happy with his hot rod and that usually spells trouble for the competition. While i don’t seem him winning, anything is possible with he and Alan Gufstafson’s fuel mileage strategies.

Greg Biffle looks to have the strongest Roush Ford by far. This is one of the Biff’s best tracks and Cali is historically a track where Roush dominates. I don’t see that this weekend as i think Carl, Matt and Ragan struggled. I think Kenseth is decent and with the Killer Bees on pit road a top 10 isn’t out of the question. Carl on the other hand appeared to really be searching. I really liked him coming into this race but you won’t find  him on any of my teams in any league.

Kyle Busch was my pick before the weekend started. He seems to be ok and has fought a tight racecar all weekend long. I see a top 10 at worse and if they make good adjustments in the race a top 5 is within reach.

Jeff Gordon seemed to be fairly stout but starts deep in the field. 24 generally has some trouble when back in the pack but i think Jeff overcomes that to finish in the top 10.

C list is a mess this week. I wish i had Menard or Speed because i’d probably use them and save Hornish and Allmendinger, which is who i have. A.J. appears to be the stronger of the two but Sammy starts up front, so tough call. As of right now my team will be 48, 29, 33, 43. Still considering 18 over 48 to save Jimmie and still considering 77 to save A.J.

I’m going to pick Kevin Harvick to win at his home track with Jimmie right behind. Sleepers are McMurray and Reutimann in the B list. Deep sleeper is Elliot Sadler. While in C list i like how Scott Speed looked. I think Menard could also suprise. I see Allmendinger finishing about 20th- 25th. Who knows with Hornish.

That’s all for this week gang, good luck FNPers!!!

Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR Preview – Auto Club 500

Monday, February 15th, 2010

These driver selections represent my roster before Yahoo’s qualifying deadline. Active and inactive drivers should be selected after qualifying and all practices take place. I will post any changes, as well as my final active roster in our Fantasy NASCAR Forum. Also, be sure to check out our Yahoo Driver Rankings before selecting your final qualifying roster.

A List

1. Jimmie Johnson (9 starts remaining)

Johnson finished 9th in this race last season and won at Auto Club Speedway, while leading the most laps, in October. Jimmie also led the most laps at Michigan last season, a sister track to Auto Club, before gambling and losing on fuel mileage.

In Yahoo’s format, drivers who qualify in the top four positions receive bonus points. These can add up over a season and make a huge difference in your standings. Johnson leads all drivers with a 1.8 average starting position in the last four races at Auto Club.

I like saving most of Johnson’s starts until later in the season, but getting him on your roster early is a safe way to navigate through the first few races while we wait for the A List to shake out.
