Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR Preview – Bristol

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

These driver selections represent my roster before Yahoo’s qualifying deadline. Active and inactive drivers should be selected after qualifying and all practices take place. I will post any changes, as well as my final active roster in our Fantasy NASCAR Forum. Also, be sure to check out our Yahoo Driver Rankings before selecting your final qualifying roster.

A List

1. Kyle Busch (9 starts remaining)

Busch won the very first COT race, which happened to be at Bristol,
and has been fast there ever since. Kyle swept both Sprint Cup races
in Thunder Valley last year and is a lock for this week’s A List.

2. Denny Hamlin (9)

Although Hamlin has gotten off to a slow start this season, his record
at Bristol is hard to ignore. In 2009, Hamlin’s average finish of 3.5
was the 2nd best among all Sprint Cup Drivers (Kyle Busch was #1).

What have we learned so far?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Off weeks during the Sprint Cup season are a great time to reflect on what has happened and how that affects fantasy NASCAR. So four races into the 2010 season, what have we learned?

1. Richard Childress drivers once again have fantasy value.

After a horrible 2009 season, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton have been much faster this year. Harvick is currently the points leader while Bowyer and Burton rank 5th and 6th in the standings, respectively. Each of these three drivers are in Yahoo’s B List and look to be locks for nine starts in 2010.

2. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back. Well back-ish.

Earnhardt was downright awful in 2009 and has shown signs of life through four races this year. Junior currently ranks 13th in the points and 5th among B List drivers in points per race. With Bristol and Martinsville up next on the Sprint Cup schedule, we’ll find out very soon just how good this 88 car can be.

3. Joey Logano is getting better every week.

More seat time means more experience. After scoring seven Top 10 finishes in ’09, Logano already has two in only four starts this season. With Harvick, Kenseth, Bowyer, Burton and Kasey Kahne looking to be nine start drivers, Logano is showing the consistency needed in fantasy NASCAR to help us hit the magical 72 B List starts needed each season.

Practice Breakdown, Atlanta

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Top 10 cars are 9, 31, 48, 24, 5, 2, 14, 17, 18, 99.  B list sleepers are; 20, 47, 56, 88, and 39. I’d save 29, 33, 11, 42 for another week. Not terrible but not their best cars. C listers rank like so; 98, 43, 77, 82, 71.

Jeff Gordon is happy with his car and that’s good enough for me. He’s a hard man to read by lap times so i’ll take his word for it. All the Hendrick cars look good, I’ll rank them 48,5, 24, 88. 88 is good but can he finish?

RCR cars don’t look nearly as good this week as they have in recent weeks. Burton looks really strong though and is my pick for 2nd. I’d rank them 31, 33, and 29. Harvick fought loose all day and doesn’t look that good.

Roush looks mediocre with Kenseth leading the way. Biffle is in a backup car and will start from the back. I’d rank them 17, 99, 16, 6. Ragan was pretty fast and this is his home track so a top 20 is possible. Carl wasn’t happy with the car and was looking at Kahne’s notes. Carl loves this place and that’s why he still makes my top 10.

Kasey Kahne looks bad fast as does his teammate Paul Menard. If only Elliot Sadler could drive he’d be a good sleeper.

Joey Logano is fast again and even with limited experience at Atlanta he just missed my top 10.

Earnhardt Ganassi looked average at best. Montoya loves this place so i could see them making the car better and challenging for a top 10. Stay away from McMurray.

So my pick to win the race is Kasey Kahne, wish i had him on my team. I’m thinking Gordon over Jimmie (save), Burton and Kenseth over Harvick and Bowyer who will be more valuable on short, flat tracks, and that brings us to the C list. Both Menard and AJ look pretty good but as of now i’m using Paul. AJ loves this place though so i can’t argue with starting him over Menard.

That’s it for this week gang, good luck FNPers.

Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR Preview – Atlanta

Monday, March 1st, 2010

These driver selections represent my roster before Yahoo’s qualifying deadline. Active and inactive drivers should be selected after qualifying and all practices take place. I will post any changes, as well as my final active roster in our Fantasy NASCAR Forum. Also, be sure to check out our Yahoo Driver Rankings before selecting your final qualifying roster.

A List

1. Mark Martin (8 starts remaining)

Martin finished 5th at Atlanta in September, and more importantly, was the Chevy representative for the Goodyear Tire test here in January. As a result, that team has a head start on the field and I expect them to unload very fast Friday.

2. Jeff Gordon (9)

Although Gordon has to be disappointed settling for a third place finish at Las Vegas Sunday, the 24 was once again fast at a 1.5 mile racetrack. Atlanta, like Vegas, is a 1.5 miler, so Gordon should pick up right where he left off last weekend.
