Paul Menard enters his second year at RCR. Menard started of 2011 with a bang, but faded as he got into Chase contention. This team could surprise, but I’m betting on more inconsistency just like last year. I’d be surprised if we use Paul more than once or twice.
Jamie McMurray definitely is one of the drivers that can only improve upon a disastrous 2011. Even in his best years, Jamie is as inconsistent as they come. Good luck picking the races in which he does well at. Texas and Martinsville are his best tracks.
Juan Pablo Montoya has yet another new crew chief, this time it’s Chris Heroy. I have no expectations for this team, Brian Pattie isn’t walking through the door anytime soon. Montoya is a stud at Watkins Glen, Infineon, Atlanta and Indianapolis.
Jeff Burton wrecked twice in three days of testing at Daytona last week. Looks like the Jeff Burton I know. One can only think that this team has no where to go but up. However, I just don’t see that ceiling being very high. I’d be pretty surprised if Burton becomes an option for us.
Regan Smith and the No. 78 team won Darlington last year, which was a great story. That’s where this story ends. I can’t see us using Smith with so many options. If I did use him somewhere it would be at Talladega or Daytona as a start saver.
So with the deepest B-list class ever, the strategy is simple. Give me four drivers each week with the most momentum. If I use Biffle or Newman up by the 15th race, so be it. There’s plenty of options to get through the season.
