Subway Fresh Fit 500 Preview

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Well I hope Daytona wasn’t too rough on you. We get to see two practice sessions this week, which will be extremely beneficial this early in the year.  The first race at the newly-configured Phoenix International Raceway, was last Fall. For all the stats from that race, check out Dave’s Inside the Numbers. PJ’s pre-qualifying roster looks very similar to mine, OK they’re identical.

A List

Carl Edwards finished second and led 27 laps at PIR last fall. I’m sure he’s tired of finishing second.  I expect Edwards to contend for the win on Sunday. I’ll be watching Carl very closely on Friday.

Kyle Busch-PJ is all in on Rowdy and I’ve taken notice.  Phoenix is one of Kyle’s favorite tracks and he’s raced there a ton. I’m sure PIR is going to be treacherous as it was last fall and no one beats Busch on talent in the Cup Series.

Tony Stewart was also fast at PIR during last year’s Chase. Smoke finished third in that race and led a race-high, 160 laps. We will see if new crew chief, Steve Addington, can find former crew chief Darian Grubb’s notebook.

Denny Hamlin and the No. 11 team welcome Darian Grubb to the team. So we know setup won’t be a problem for this team. If they finish well again this weekend lookout, as they will officially be on their way to a huge bounce back year.

Yahoo Fantasy Racing Preview – Subway Fresh Fit 500

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

With the Daytona 500 pushed back to Monday night due to rain, we have a short turnaround this week to get ready for Phoenix.

Luckily, we get to see two Sprint Cup Series practice session Friday before having to lockdown our qualifying rosters.

As a result, I’m not going to get too in-depth with mind-blowing stats or locks to my Yahoo Fantasy Racing roster since there will certainly be changes after we get to see practice.

A List

Kyle Busch (9 Starts Remaining)

As described in my Six Bold Predictions article, I’m all-in on Busch this season, so I have to give him strong consideration at the first non-restrictor plate race, right? Busch only completed 188 of 312 laps at Phoenix in November after experiencing engine problems, but I’m expecting a big rebound for the 18 team this week, starting with impressive practice sessions Friday.

Carl Edwards (9)

Edwards finished 2nd on the newly-repaved surface at Phoenix last Fall and is another early favorite to make this week’s Yahoo roster.

Inside The Numbers: Phoenix

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Phoenix International Raceway still fits under the wild card category. Before the most recent visit to PIR the track was overhauled. The surface was re-paved, re-configured, and progressive banking was added. We will use the data from that race as our focal point for this week.

One race isn’t enough to really seek trends or to get in-depth analysis from the numbers. Luckily we will get to see some practice before locking down our Yahoo rosters. We will still help you to identify a few drivers whom you should keep a keen eye on during that track time.

Also, be sure to view our other previews, chat, and Kyle’s practice breakdown to get the best review and analysis of practice that you’ll find anywhere. All are a definite must to help you to properly prepare and make those tough roster decisions.

Fantasy Racing Reaction: Budweiser Shootout

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

NASCAR spent the offseason making rule changes in an attempt to break up the two-car draft and boy did they succeed.

Gone is the tandem drafting that angered fans and back are the packs, leading to big wrecks and big excitement.

Unfortunately for us fantasy players, the only conclusion we can realistically draw is that there are no conclusions to draw.

The Daytona 500 is going to as unpredictable as ever, so save yourself the stress of breaking down the Bud Shootout and practice sessions.

They won’t matter.

The only piece of advice I can give is don’t use any B or C List drivers with the potential to get 9 starts this season in Yahoo Fantasy Racing.

Feel free to disagree, but here are the drivers that won’t sniff my lineup for the Daytona 500:

B List – Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and A.J. Allmendinger

C List – Aric Almirola and Trevor Bayne

Six Bold Predictions for the 2012 Sprint Cup Season

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Since the Sprint Cup cars last hit the racetrack, we’ve seen big name drivers like Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, A.J. Allmendinger and Clint Bowyer find different rides and top-tier crew chiefs like Steve Addington and Darian Grubb turning wrenches for new drivers.

NASCAR has also made modifications to the racecar itself, assigning a new rules package to break up the two-car draft at restrictor plate tracks and implementing a new EFI fuel-system across the board.

These changes add up to what promises to be one of the most unpredictable and exciting Sprint Cup seasons in recent memory.

And I’m not talking about a Barack Obama pledge to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term kind of promise. I mean a real promise.

So without further ado, I present six bold predictions for the 2012 Sprint Cup Season:
