Time to draw names out of a hat, it’s plate-track racing time. I’m not going to give you stats this week. Instead pick whoever you feel is due for a good run and let the chips fall where they may. We do get to see two practices before locking down, not that they’ll help us pick our teams. Qualifying also doesn’t matter here. The only thing that does matter, is staying out of trouble. Don’t use any guys you plan on using nine times this week, it’s just not worth the gamble. My strategy will be to choose my starters before qualifying and have a bench full of qualifiers. Look for anyone with a Hendrick Motor or an ECR Motor to be a candidate for the pole. Take any points you can get this week, you’ll need them all.
Daytona International Speedway is a 2.5 mile tri-oval. This speedway has 31 degrees of banking in the corners, 13 degrees on the straights, and 18 degrees in the tri-oval. As mentioned previously in the Talladega preview, cars will have restrictor plates on them to prevent them from going wide open. This creates a bunch of cars in tight proximity, which creates the big wrecks. I expect to see the two car tandems again this week. Teams run in pairs because two cars run faster than a pack of cars. So drivers will need a partner, while staying out of trouble.
A List
1. Kevin Harvick- No one is better at riding around in the back until the end of the race than Harvick. That’s a good strategy to stay out of trouble. Harvick does come with some risk, since he’s sitting pretty in the points. He can afford to throw caution to the wind while others can’t. Harvick had a really fast car before blowing up in February at Daytona.
