Inside The Numbers: Texas

April 9th, 2012

After a week off for Easter, NASCAR will head to Texas Motor Speedway for race number seven of the 2012 Sprint Cup Season. Texas Motor Speedway is a 1.5 mile intermediate track, with 24 degrees of banking in the corners and five degrees in the straightaways. The frontstretch is 2,250 feet in length and the backstretch is shorter at 1,330 feet in length.

Texas Motor Speedway is one of the fastest 1.5 mile tracks on the schedule. This is a track where teams must have the complete package in order to win: stout horsepower, great aerodynamics, good handling, and a reliable fuel mileage strategy. The teams that do not have a good handle on the electronic fuel injection could be at a disadvantage near the conclusion of the race on Saturday night.

The Samsung Mobile 500 will provide us with the first night race of the season, but yet another quirky practice and qualifying schedule.  For fans of Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR you will get data from one practice session on Thursday (4:30pm- 6:30 pm), before having to lock your rosters for the Thursday Night deadline. We will then wait until Friday to see final practice (2:00pm–3:30 pm) and qualifying (5:40 pm).  Finally, the green flag will wave for the Samsung Mobile 500 at approximately 6:46 pm on Saturday evening.

*(Times are local to the Track)

M&M’s “When We Win, You Could Win” Sweepstakes

April 5th, 2012

I was contacted by M&M’s (and compensated with a delicious bag of candy) and asked to let everyone know about their ”When We Win, You Could Win” sweepstakes:

With the Sprint Cup Series now underway, fans are gearing up for another exciting season of NASCAR racing. M&M’S Racing is celebrating the season with the “When We Win, You Could Win” sweepstakes, which features instant-win prizes and the chance to win a 2012 Toyota Camry each time the #18 M&M’S car wins a race.

Once fans register and enter the sweepstakes at the “When We Win, You Could Win” site, they are automatically eligible for the Instant Win Game. Each time the #18 M&M’S car wins, a panel of judges will conduct a drawing, selecting one lucky grand prize winner. The prizing breakdown is as follows:

Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Practice Breakdown

March 30th, 2012

Martinsville is one of the few tracks where driver feel is more important than lap times.  As a result don’t expect many roster changes from my early week lineup. Of course it never hurts when your drivers are fast in practice too.

A- 24, 48, 29, 11, 18, 2, 14, 17, 99

Jeff Gordon said his car this weekend is the best car he’s ever had here. That’s saying something for a guy that’s won here seven times. So, the 24 is my favorite to win, which means he makes the team.

Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team sandbagged in the first practice. They wanted to go out early in qualifying on Saturday. They should have a small advantage as the track will be cooler, however this is one of the quicker qualifying sessions all year. I Expect all the Hendrick cars to be bad fast on Sunday.

Kevin Harvick was as fast as anyone in practice not named Gordon. However, Kevin wasn’t completely happy with the 29 machine, as he was fighting tight. He should easily be top 10 on Sunday.

Denny Hamlin was visibly frustrated with his car in Happy Hour while talking to Darian Grubb. However, he could finish top five in a dump truck at Martinsville.

Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Preview and Driver Rankings

March 27th, 2012

I’m starting to know how Kasey Kahne feels. However, unlike him, Martinsville is one of my best tracks. We get to see practice this week, but I don’t need it.

Martinsville is a half-mile, flat track. Aerodynamics don’t mean much here, as it’s all about mechanical grip and track position. There’s really no other track quite like it on the circuit.

Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Picks

March 27th, 2012

This week we get to see both Sprint Cup Practice sessions before locking down, which will be instrumental for me when selecting my Yahoo Fantasy Racing roster for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500.

In the A List alone, there are five drivers (Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon) that I’ll consider if they show speed in practice Friday.

As a result, I’m not going to load up this week’s preview with statistics since there is so much that can change after practice.

But since the anticipation for my weekly Yahoo preview rivals that of The Hunger Games, I’m starting off with this as my baseline roster for the week:

A List – Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin
B List – Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr.
C List – Brian Vickers, Aric Almirola

After analyzing both sessions Friday, I’ll post my qualifying roster in our Forum and on Twitter (@FNPNASCAR), so be sure to check back later this week.
